In august we left on an epic trip to norway, look at the country and race at the scandinavian cal-look classic. Visit some norwegian friends and just have a good time. mission accomplished

Jaren geleden op het midland racecircuit in lelystad. Mijn eerste meters op een circuit. Dit was de verkenningsronde. Ik ben de eerste lichtblauwe kever. Er rijden er twee achter elkaar.

Put in the rolbar,kind of hard with the difference in height but it ended up strong.

Installed the button for the linelock. the rest of the system in a couple of weeks, just couldn't wait to play with the nice button.

Installed the new ignition system, it's a bit bulky and heavy but it will do anything we want it to do. twin spark, coil on plug with advance adjustable to boost and rpm.

We are going oxyboxer. For those not in the know, a beetle engine is a aircooled boxer engine. We will be using an engine out of an 80 vw transporter. These are wasserboxer or 4 cilinder watercooled engines. The engines look a lot like beetle engines but with watercooling and a hint of the type 4 vw/porsche 4 cilinder boxerengine.
A oxyboxer is a wasserboxer without the waterjackets. These are cutof and with some other modifications type 1 beetle engineparts will be mounted to create a rocksolid 1300 turbo engine.
We go through all this trouble because a wasserboxercase is much stronger then anything else and it has potential for future projects.
The case will be machined down to lose the watterjackets surounding the cilinders.
The headstuds are placed in a different pitch so this will be changed to type 1 pitch to use 1300 double port rods, cilinders, pistons and heads. A type 1 coolingshroud fan and dynamo will be made to fit.

De intercooler/spoiler is on the car to. Hope it will take the intaketemperature down a lot.

These are the parts of a bosch system used by saab to control boostpressure. It's called APC or automatic performance control. We're going to addapt this to work with the higher boost our engine is going to see. It's senses detonation and reduces boost until detonation stops. So at all times you're engine is making all the power it possibly can.

Finished fabricating the intake and exhaust manifauld. About 40 manhoures in this. Made some biginners mistakes though, next one should be easier. Welding stainless is harder then welding normal steel too. It twists like hell when you heat(weld) it.

Nice view on the heatexchanger, air goos through the waterjacketed intake plenum and is hence cooled. Warmer water is used to heat vaporiser voor liquid propane (fuel)

We bought the cheapest, lightest and smallest alloys we could find but ofcourse they didn't fit a beetle, almost nothing does. Instead of redrilling the drums we chose to redrill the rims. Filled in the hollows at the back and drilled holes in the right spot with the right bolthead radius

This is the chargecooled plenum Pieter designed and fabricated. Inlet with boostgage, plenum with waterjacket and one exit for each cilinder.

Because car throttlebodys are often to big for our goal or the have bulky things like idlevalves on it, we bought motorcyclethrottlebodys. There from a bmw 75KTS.

Bitburg was bloody cold but a blast. Was it a succes? NO, but it was fun.
We arrived late fridatnight and unpacked, put up the caravan and the tents. We had a very nice spot with the people van keversite and kaag. A beer friday night and an icecold night, saterday was on. My girlfriend didn't recover from the cold friday night so she was shivering al weekend and in a bad mood. That morning we pulled out the tools and changed wheels and engine in under an hour. People over there made us out to be crazy for doing al the work. The engine in, it started right away but the miwture was gesture and therfore not very good. The techinspectors looked at us very angry but since we we're in order we could run the car.

The first run was akward. Didn't do a burnout because I was affraid the vaporiser would freese. The car runs on lpg and when it vaporises the vaporiser gets cold. For that reasen it is water heated by the turbo cooling water with an electric waterpump. The turbo however wasn't very hot so there was a tenddency from freezing up. At the lines I didn't mis my start but the car sagged, a loud bang , while I was just out of first gear the other guy was helfway the quartermile.
The mixtue was way of and the time was horrible,23 or something, worse than the car naturally aspirated. We changed the way the vaporiser faced too stabilise the mixture and went on the road with the race engine for some road tuning. It seemed we could run for a relatively long time before freezing over and we got the mixture about right.
Getting a croud around the car was never a problem however. People we're very curious to how it worked and when we explained there we're a lot of people who told us it would explode if we fired the car up. The faces we're priveless when you turn the key, rev the car and explosions are very absent.

Over the next couple of runs we did better but not super. The turbo we chose was on the big side, to make things worse we had a very long exhaustsystem and it was far from pressuresealed. The result was the turbo just didn't spool up until you realy revved the car. The good thing was though that Robin who pointed out that the turbo was too large also offered to provide us a sutable turbo. We got it now and the build is on for next year.

Was it a good weekend? It was bloody cold and the car was slower than at EBI2 but the general idea about the enginesystem worked. Right now we're finetuning it for next year, keep an eye out.

Great fastback, hope mine will look and ride like thatone oneday.

It's been a while since I posted here but that doesn't mean nothing happened.
He're are a couple pictures from the second european bugin.
We didn't get the engine finished in time so we quickly rebuilt the engine to NA teh night before we left en of we we're in the morning. No test drive or nothing, just the 230km's to the lovely town of chimay. I must say I was pleased to arrive there :). We changed the tires and went to the tech inspections of both the drags and the slalom. It must be said that to pass the slalominspection your car had to be a lot safer. We enjoyed ourselves and times on the slalomtrack got better. By that time we had nearly lost a frontwing and a headlight. The drags we're fun but nothing special, long waits every time.

Because we we're so slow most people wouldn't drive against us. That didn't bother me mutch, I was driving against the clock and I beat it, better time then last year with same engine (but other car and other track (bitburg). I dont exactly remember teh time but it was more than a second better, 20 and a bit this time, so still very slow, don't laugh :p.

The thing is we had lots of fun and I must say the organisers and the crew from the slalomcoarse (kcd) did a great job. One thing, a central party location at night would be nice.

We didn't work long but the trend is set.
If you look at previous pictures you will see the hole is patched up airtight. We wouldn't do it like this in a resto but it had to go fast.

I started on the wiring loom too. It took me a lot of head scratching to get started but I think it will go smoot from here on.

An update, This is my friend and partner in crime. On goal this year, leave lots of rubber, smoke and empty beerbottles and offcourse while doing so, keep our girlfriends happy. A picture of our car too. It's gotta be on the road mid march. Anybody in coubt? We aren't.

Well, the point is to make use amounts of torque and horsepower. There is no fun in that if you can't get it to the ground. The 180 mm clutch would never cope with that amount of power so we went for a 200mm clutch. A normal one, when this doesn't keep up we will upgrade to a reinforced pressure plate later.

These are valve springs. Because we will probably rev a little higher then a normal engine in normal circonstances we have to add these springs to keep the valves from flaoting.

I'm sorry for the blurry picture. These are all very thin iron rings. You put them between the differential cover and the diff itself to add preload on the spidergears. This makes your normal differential think it is a limited slip diff. When this sounds like chinese to you, I'll explain it as I do it.

These are parts to solidmount the trans. We are gonna modify it to ad a thor brace. For those of you who don't know it keep watching. Solidmounting the trans is just one of the things to do to keep the wheels from bouncing up and down on hard accelerations.

This little piece screws in the oil pressure gallery. Normaly it is used to ad an oiltemperaturesensor. We will use it to tap oil for the turbo.

The front axle of my former daily driver Lil' Lizzy. It's a standard size axle with drum brakes and standard hight spindels. A oversized stabalizer will be added. Low and tight should get us through the corners.

The gearbox is a standard low gearing 1200 gearbox. It wil be braced and fitted with a poormans posi kit from gene berg.

The car itself, a 1200 standard beetle from 1974. Looks like crap, isn't perfect but will be beautiful ones again. For now we'll just have some fun with it in the summer and get it on the road as an oldtimer ( fewer demand at the vihicle inspection)

These bucketseats we're cheap and secondhand. They will keep us from bracing us with our legs against the door. LOL

As corky bell said, an intercooler is not the icing on the cake, it's an other cake alltogether. Good turbos have intercoolers, hence: It's from a open frontera 4x4

It might be called Liquid Propane Gas But when it isn't kept under pressure it's still a gas. Hence it has to be stored in a pressure tank. These things are bomb proof so safety is not a problem. From these they will go in to a vaporisor and from there the gas will go to a mixer divise plumbed into the intake. More on this as we build. We'll explain it good.

This is my racing engine from last year. It was pretty tame so adding the turbo won't be a problem. It's a 1200 botthemend with 1300 DP heads, doghouse cooling. The carburetion was 2 dellorto DRLA 36 mm. The intake manifold will become standard 1300DP manifold with a throttle body on top.

14 inch steel wheel, 5.5 inch wide. These will turn our gearing down and give us cart-like handling. Going fast is the key-word.

In the last post I thought about making this car my new daily. It's been a long time since and the fastback has become the new daily driver. Now I promise you there will be more updates soon because the orange car has been choosen for our new project. Actualy it's our first project.

The orange car (AKA Bad Bitch)is gonna be turned into a lowbudget racecar.
It's gonna be streetlegal with an other engine to drive to the races. This is because lack of a trailer.
At the races it will sport a 1200 turbocharged intercooled liquid propane powered engine.
Yes, this is unusual but it's also the cheapest way to power. Certainly considering our parts stock. I hope we've got you're attention and you'll become a regular here.

Sinds mijn dagelijkse wagen niet meer door de keuring is geraakt heb ik een nieuwe nodig. Ofwel kan ik lizzy opmaken ofwel deze (bad bitch) opmaken....? De bodem van deze kever is goed maar de carrosserie minder, misschien kan ik deze bodem gebruiken met de kas van lizzy. Ik zal wel zien tegen het einde van de zomer. De kas van lizzy gebruiken zou me ook een, mooi elektrisch systeem geven, bad bitch heeft een 6 naar 12 volt ombouw gehad.Hier enige foto's.

Er is ooit iemand achterin gereden en daarom is de vorige eigenaar begonnen met reparaties. Het is wel niet bijster goed gedaan, die nieuwe platen zitten over de oude in plaats van er tegen. Dit ga ik allemaal terug opnieuw doen. Misschien wel met een verwijderbare achterkant... wie weet? De schort die hij erin laste is nieuw en nog bruikbaar denk ik.

nogal slecht gelast Gaatjes links en rechts onderaan het raam, zijn geen vervangstukken voor te krijgen voor zover ik weet, creatief zijn met metaal dan.

Een gat rechts achteraan het torsiehuis, ziet er veel erger uit dan het is, het omliggende metaal is lekker stevig en proper zodat het lassen goed zal gaan.

Dit is de plaats waar de rand opzat voor de kofferkleprubber. Deze was zoals bij zovelen verroest en gaat opgeknapt worden en vervangen worden door een mexicaanse rubber. Deze wordt vastgeklemt aan de kofferklep in plaats van aan de bak zodat hier geen water kan blijven staan. Kleverre mannen, die mexicanen.

De elektriciteit is omgebouwd van 6 naar 12 volt en is maar een warboel. Ik ben van plan volledig zelf een nieuwe kabelboom te bouwen met alle nieuwe functies die ik nodig heb.
